The designs in Thomas Jr's work are carved in reverse into the tufa molds he prepares.

Tufa is   compressed volcanic ash with a sandstone-like texture which is found deposited locally in layers in the Painted Desert region of the North American Southwest.  Once the molds are made. molten silver or gold  is poured into the mold. Each mold  can be used once only, creating a single unique piece.
